Queen’s College Enhanced Student Experience and Cost Efficiency with CloudLabs’ Hands-on Lab Environments

Overview

Queen’s University, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, resides on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples. The university, founded in 1841, fosters a deeply integrated campus community actively contributing to the regional and local economy, social fabric, and culture. Over the years the institute has grown to educate 31,000 full- and part-time students, including 4,000 international students from 101 countries. Queen’s University faced unique challenges due to its diverse international student bodyThe students using Mac OS were required to access Windows OS machines for data analytics applications such as Power BI Desktop. Also, the university sought a platform to provision EC2 instances with handson lab environments featuring pre-installed tools and auto-alerts available. The pre-installed tools would facilitate smooth lab operations, while the alerts would help reduce lab costs.

By collaborating with CloudLabs, Queen’s University could leverage the following benefits:

  • CloudLabs enabled students to continue their training on EC2 instances with pre-installed Power BI desktop applications from their Mac OS devices.
  • Labs came with pre-installed tools, automated alerts, and VM shutdown features, addressing the university’s needs for cost-effective and seamless operations.
  • Automation in labs freed administrators! Letting them focus on higher-priority tasks and enhancing overall efficiency and resource management.
